Insect invasions track a tree invasion: Global distribution of black locust herbivores

چکیده
Aim Many invasive plant species benefit from enemy release resulting the absence of insect herbivores in their invaded range. However, over time, specialized may ‘catch up’ with such plants. Black locust is a tree relatively limited native range North America but has large areas virtually every temperate continent including America. We hypothesize that both intra- and intercontinental spread black leads to parallel, though delayed pattern herbivores. Location Global. Taxon locust, Robinia pseudoacacia, its Methods compiled historical records occurrence herbivore associated R. pseudoacacia all world regions. Based on this list, we describe taxonomic patterns investigate associations between environmental features numbers non-native specialist portion by pseudoacacia. Results A total 454 herbivorous are recorded feeding across world, 23 these being Robinia. From group, seven have successfully expanded beyond Within America, richness specialists explained combination road density, distance range, climate. Main Conclusion Non-native accumulated other continents. The steady build-up invasions likely diminished benefited – trend will continue future. These findings support hypothesis plants promote parallel

The global distribution of diet breadth in insect herbivores.
Understanding variation in resource specialization is important for progress on issues that include coevolution, community assembly, ecosystem processes, and the latitudinal gradient of species richness. Herbivorous insects are useful models for studying resource specialization, and the interaction between plants and herbivorous insects is one of the most common and consequential ecological ass...
متن کاملPlant Defense against Insect Herbivores
Plants have been interacting with insects for several hundred million years, leading to complex defense approaches against various insect feeding strategies. Some defenses are constitutive while others are induced, although the insecticidal defense compound or protein classes are often similar. Insect herbivory induce several internal signals from the wounded tissues, including calcium ion flux...
متن کاملPlant immunity to insect herbivores.
Herbivorous insects use diverse feeding strategies to obtain nutrients from their host plants. Rather than acting as passive victims in these interactions, plants respond to herbivory with the production of toxins and defensive proteins that target physiological processes in the insect. Herbivore-challenged plants also emit volatiles that attract insect predators and bolster resistance to futur...
متن کاملMapping the Global Potential Geographical Distribution of Black Locust (Robinia Pseudoacacia L.) Using Herbarium Data and a Maximum Entropy Model
Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is a tree species of high economic and ecological value, but is also considered to be highly invasive. Understanding the global potential distribution and ecological characteristics of this species is a prerequisite for its practical exploitation as a resource. Here, a maximum entropy modeling (MaxEnt) was used to simulate the potential distribution of thi...
متن کاملOpposing effects of native and exotic herbivores on plant invasions.
Exotic species are widely assumed to thrive because they lack natural enemies in their new ranges. However, a meta-analysis of 63 manipulative field studies including more than 100 exotic plant species revealed that native herbivores suppressed exotic plants, whereas exotic herbivores facilitated both the abundance and species richness of exotic plants. Both outcomes suggest that plants are esp...
